No More Water Bottles!
Submitted By: Kim Curiel (kimcuriel@yahoo.com)

Challenge
I was sick to death of seeing half empty plastic water bottles left throughout my house. At first I made lots of noise at my kids to finish their water then put the bottles in the recycling bin. Very quickly the bin filled to overflowing. Then I had them crushing them, still the bottles overflowed the bins. I started thinking, "If it's like this here, think about the whole country drinking these stupid bottles of water!" That's when I decided; No more plastic water bottles! I refused to buy another one.

We bought a Brita water filter pitcher. We bought a few glass bottles of water and filled them with the filtered water to keep in the fridge. I bought some of the new Swiss made stainless steel water bottles at the new Elephant Pharm in Walnut Creek. Those bottles, although expensive, are very practical for travel. They come in several sizes from 6 oz to 40 oz. and in dozens of colors and designs. They cost between $18 to $22. There is a variety of different tops to choose from as well.

Benefits & Payback
Since we never buy water in bottles any more and get that for near free now. Considering that we'd been paying many dollars a gallon for water this is a significant savings. I've read that the worst thing you can do to the environment besides drive an SUV is to drink bottled water. Drinking bottled water does not guarantee any special qualities to the water anyway. When we filter our own water we know what we're getting.
