- 14 billion paper coffee cups are thrown away every year in the U.S. – enough to circle the earth 55 times and weigh 900 million pounds. Read about how to reduce waste from disposable coffee cups
- The amount of water that goes into one hamburger is the equivalent of taking a 45 minute shower once a day for a week. (spotted by a member in the New York Times)
- About 15% of all residential waste in California is food waste that can now be easily recycled by putting it in the green bin with your yard waste.
- Bottled water has been getting a lot of attention lately. Americans drank 8.25 billion gallons of bottled water last year (up 9.5% from 2005) even though it hasn't been shown to be any better than tap water, requires oil to make the plastic, produces emissions to ship it from wherever it's bottled, and then deposits 2 billion pounds per year in our landfills, since less than 25% of the bottles are recycled.
- It turns out that food (and all the energy it takes to make it) is one of the largest human activities contributing to global warming. The average American creates 2.8 tons of CO2 emissions each year due to their food choices -- even more than the 2.2 tons each person generates by driving, according to recent research (Echel and Martin, 2006).
