Lafayette Earth Day Celebration 2010

Celebrating 40 Years!

On Sunday, April 25th, the City of Lafayette, Sustainable Lafayette, the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce, and Lafayette Library & Learning Center will host the 5th annual Earth Day celebration. There will be two main parts: a “Picnic on the Green” at the downtown Plaza Park and Eco-Learning at the new Library. So, you can enjoy a special community picnic in the center of town, and then wander down to the new Library to listen to music and learn from local non-profits and consortium partners.


Picnic on the Green (11:30 - 2pm)


Plaza-Park
A community picnic right in the center of town! Bring your own or buy lunch at the square prepared with food donated by local farmers. Enjoy great food, live music, and learn about all the groups and people who are helping to make Lafayette more earth-friendly. Check out the “Equip Your Life for Sustainability” booth with the latest green products from local merchants. Preview the upcoming farmers’ market and buy veggie starters for your own garden.

Enjoy a Community Picnic - Bring your own or purchase a tasty lunch ($5, $3 for kids & seniors), made with fresh/seasonal food donated by farmers, including four different plates to choose from. Look at the menu...

Be Inspired - Green Award winners will be announced and don’t miss the “Wall of Thanks” which will list groups and individuals from across Lafayette who are helping to build a more sustainable community.

Listen to Live Music - Laura Zucker and Calaveras will be performing during lunch. Laura is a local award-winning singer/songwriter, will be performing during lunch in the style of James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, and Melissa Etheridge. Calaveras is a well-known local band featuring original acoustic roots music.

Showcase of Green Products - an oversized booth that will have a sampling of the latest green products from Lafayette merchants such as Ace Hardware, Clocks, etc, Diablo Foods, Elmwood Stationers, Lafayette Bookstore, Open Sesame, Sharp Bicycles, Orchard Nursery, and Eco-Boutique. There will be a wide range of products for sale that are all under $20, such as reusable produce bags, notebooks made with recycled paper, organic shampoo, books, and much more... And pick up a new Lafayette Green Guide which shows where you can find even more green businesses and products right in Lafayette.

Visit with Local Green Businesses - Dolan Lumber, Ecolunch Boxes, Handlebar Toys, Net Zero Energy Architects, New Leaf America, Next Energy Solar, Chartreuse Products, Farm Fresh to You, Homegrown, Mt. Diablo Nursury, No Trace Shredding, and Michael Chavez Center Housekeeping & Landscaping.

Buy Veggie Garden Starters - Mt. Diablo Nursery, Orchard Nursery, and The Urban Farmers will be selling veggie starters.



Eco-Learning at the Library (1 - 4pm)

A special afternoon at the new Lafayette Library & Learning Center to learn new things about the earth and how to protect it. Listen to live music at the amphitheater, visit a special kids’ arts & crafts room, learn from local non-profits, watch a movie, and take advantage of educational programs offered by consortium partners. The Historical Society and Friends Corner Bookshop will both be open during the event.

Learn from Consortium Partners - The Lindsay Wildlife Museum will have live animals in the Children’s area.

Visit Non-Profit Educational Tables at the Outdoor Plaza - Local non-profits such as Wastediversion.org, 511 Contra Costa, EarthTeam, Lafayette Garden Club, California Native Gardens, Muir Land Trust, Sustainable Contra Costa, Lafayette Library Foundation will share exhibits and information on how to protect the environment. There will be also be live bee and worm composting demonstrations.

Participate in Kids’ Activities - The Art & Science Discovery Center will be turned into a crafts area where kids can make things from recycled household items . The Lorax Club will be reading children’s books in the Children’s area.

Listen to The Big Band of Rossmoor - They will be playing from 1pm - 3pm at the outdoor Amphitheater. More info..

Watch a Movie - What’s On Your Plate? A witty and provocative documentary about kids and food, being screened by Oliver Taylor (a 12-year-old in Lafayette) at 1:30 and 3pm in the Teen Room. Oliver is the youth spokesperson for The Urban Farmers and was awarded one of the 2010 "Disney Friends for Change" grants.  More info...

Learn About Lafayette History - The Historical Society will be displaying photopgraphs from Lafayette’s agricultural past and leading historical tours of local landmarks.



Self-Propelled Parade & Parking (Departs 11:30pm)

Park at Stanley - Parking around the Plaza and Library will be tight, so we encourage you to arrive on foot or bike if possible. Consider parking at or near Stanley Middle School and then walking from there.

Be Part of a Self-Propelled Parade - A parent-organized parade will depart Stanley at 11:30am. Bring your feet, bike, skateboard, unicycle, scooter, skates, wagon, or anything else with wheels.
